Nursing Career Pathway

Employed Student Nurse (ESN) Program

The Employed Student Nurse (ESN) program is a unique employment opportunity for nursing and psychiatric nursing students. These supernumerary positions provide ESNs 300hrs of paid experience to learn in a real-life healthcare environment, share their knowledge with different healthcare team members, and bring new energy to all the areas participating in the program.

  • A dedicated Clinical Education Team will support and mentor you through your transition from student to nurse and can help guide your nursing career path.
  • The ESN opportunities differ depending on the geographical location from small rural towns to major cities.

Nursing New Grad Support Program

The New Grad Program provides new RN/RPN/LPN graduates with learning opportunities that encourage confidence and competence as they transition into their new graduate practice.

This tailored program is available for the first 18 months after nursing graduation and provides learning opportunities to further develop clinical skills and consolidate your practice.

  • Then program includes workshops designed specifically for new grads
  • New Graduate Clinical Nurse Educators are available to RNS and LPNs in acute care medical/surgical/specialty units to provide support in areas such as clinical skills, clinical decision-making, resource finding, and emotional well-being.

Health Career Access Program (HCAP)

Get paid to learn and have a job waiting for you as soon as your training is done with the VCH Health Career Access Program (HCAP) to become a registered care aide. As long as you’ve completed Grade 10 in high school – including English 10 or equivalent – and have a valid driver’s license, you can apply for this program which offers an easy-entry, financially supported start to long-term career growth opportunities across VCH.
