Harm reduction: Toward the Heart
The Neuropsychiatry Program treats adults with brain injuries or diseases causing serious disturbances in behaviour, mood, intellectual abilities or thinking processes and somatoform disorders.
What to expect
The BC Neuropsychiatry Program includes inpatient and outpatient services.
- Inpatient services are provided in two locations: UBC Hospital (10 bed open unit) & Hillside Centre in Kamloops (12 bed closed unit).
- Outpatient services is located at UBC Hospital.

Conditions we treat
Some of the conditions the programs treat are:
- Parkinson's Disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Epilepsy
- Head injury
- Anoxic and metabolic brain injuries
- Tourette's syndrome
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
- Stroke
- Dementias
- Neurological Disease
- Unresponsive states (ex. Catatonia)
- Movement disorders
- Somatoform Disorder
- Conversion Disorder

- Adults aged 19 and above
We accept referrals for consideration to the UBC Neuropsychiatry Program for patients with:
- Dementia of any cause, with either major behavioral or psychiatric components, and/or a need to exclude a causal or contributing psychiatric illness (e.g. pseudodementia)
- Neurological disease, injury or condition leading to a psychiatric presentation
- Episodic disturbances thought to possibly result from a neurological disorder, such as epilepsy
- Unresponsive states, such as catatonia
- Movement disorders that require psychiatric interventions such as tardive dyskinesia, Parkinson's disease or Huntington's disease
- Somatoform & conversion disorders
We do not accept referrals for:
- Neuropsychological Testing
- Developmental Disorders, including Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
- Autism Spectrum Disorder, including Asperger's Disorder- Refer to CLBC or Spectrum
- Patients with active medical/legal cases, including ICBC
- Patients with active WorkSafe BC cases unless referred via a WorkSafe BC medical advisor

Hours of operation
Outpatient Clinic: Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Inpatient Units: Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You must be referred by a doctor or hospital within BC or the Yukon.
