Insite user statistics

There have been more than 3.6 million visits to inject illicit drugs under supervision by nurses at Insite since 2003. There have been 48,798 clinical treatment visits and 6,440 overdose interventions without any deaths.

Public Health Emergency declared

A Public Health Emergency was declared in B.C. on April 14, 2016 in response to the opioid overdose crisis.
  • Before the Public Health Emergency declared: There were 30 overdose interventions a MONTH.
  • After the Public Health Emergency declared: There are now eight overdose interventions a DAY.

User statistics from January 1 – December 31, 2019

  • 170,731 visits by 5,111 individuals

  • An average of 312 injection room visits per day

  • 1,314 overdose interventions

  • 3,158 clinical treatment interventions (such as wound care, pregnancy tests)

  • Substances reported used were opioids (60% of instances), stimulant (15% of instances), and mixed (24% of instances)

  • 27% of participants were women

  • 19% of participants were Indigenous

Previous stats

  • 189,837 visits by 5,436 individuals

  • An average of 337 injection room visits per day

  • 1,466 overdose interventions

  • 3,725 clinical treatment interventions (such as wound care, pregnancy tests)

  • Substances reported used were opioids (62% of instances), stimulant (19% of instances), and mixed (19% of instances)

  • 28% of participants were women

  • 19% of participants were Indigenous

  • For the fiscal year 2017/18 443 clients accessed Onsite, the adjoining detox treatment facility, with an average stay of 11 days. Note: Clients may have been referred to other detox or treatment services elsewhere.

  • 175,455 visits by 5,350 individuals

  • An average of 356 injection room visits per day

  • 1,983 overdose interventions

  • 3,402 clinical treatment interventions (such as wound care, pregnancy tests)

  • Substances reported used were opioids (66% of instances), stimulant (20% of instances), and mixed (13% of instances)

  • 28% of participants were women

  • 18% of participants were Indigenous

  • For the fiscal year 2017/18 443 clients accessed Onsite, the adjoining detox treatment facility, with an average stay of 11 days. Note: Clients may have been referred to other detox or treatment services elsewhere. 

The statistics were updated July 2019. In doing so, several discrepancies were found. The figures here are correct.
